Meet Philip J. Bonamo

Mr. Bonamo has been a licensed attorney with the Florida Bar for 28 years. He is an AV-rated attorney by Martindale-Hubbell. He is Partner at the Rice Law Firm, located in Daytona Beach, Florida. His practice areas are concentrated to Marital & Family Law and Criminal Defense. Mr. Bonamo is considered a Specialist in the area of Marital & Family Law, and he has been a Board Certified Attorney by the Florida Bar in the area of Criminal Trial Law for 23 years.

Mr. Bonamo received his Juris Doctor degree from Stetson University College of Law. While in law school, Mr. Bonamo was extensively involved in Stetson’s trial practice and clinic programs. Prior to attending Stetson University, he received his Bachelor of Arts degree, with honors, from the University of Florida.

Prior to going into private practice, Mr. Bonamo was a prosecutor for a total of nine years, having worked as an Assistant State Attorney for the 7th Judicial Circuit of Florida, and was also an Assistant United States Attorney for the United States Attorney’s Office, Middle District of Florida. Mr. Bonamo handled and tried all types of criminal matters, including homicides, career criminal prosecution and complex white-collar / fraud cases. He served as a Supervising Attorney in the Felony Trial Division for several years. While a state prosecutor, he was also an Adjunct Professor at the former Daytona Beach Community College teaching in the areas of criminal and constitutional law.

Mr. Bonamo is the elected Board of Governor Representative to The Florida Bar for the 7th Judicial Circuit of Florida, serving currently on the Board of Governor’s Rules Committee (Chair), Disciplinary Procedural Rules Committee, Communications Committee, and the Disciplinary Review Committee. Mr. Bonamo is an “Advisor” attorney for the Florida Bar’s Lawyers Advising Lawyers Program (LAL). Mr. Bonamo previously served as a mentor for law school students in Florida through The Florida Bar’s E Mentor Program. He is a former board member and officer for the Volusia County Bar Association and is a prior President of the Volusia County Bar Association. Mr. Bonamo is a former Board of Director for the Bert Fish Medical Center Foundation, and as well is a former member of Board of Directors for the SE Volusia County Chamber of Commerce.

The Florida Supreme Court, in a 5-1 Opinion, ruled this month that law enforcement can order a driver out of their vehicle they have pulled over for a routine traffic stop, for officer safety before conducting a vehicle sweep.
A Florida Appeals Court ruled this month that law enforcement have no expectation of privacy while in their official roles/while on duty. As such, Florida’s 5 District Court of th Appeals (5 DCA) has now stated that in Florida the state’s long-standing law against recording th telephone calls without the permission of all parties to the call does not apply to calls with law enforcement officers.
