Paul Rice of the Rice & Rose Law Firm, seated here at left, joined Judges Matthew Foxman and Dawn Nichols as well as Attorney Lisa Starks to present a Family Law Professionalism Seminar for Law Day 2014 at the Volusia County Courthouse in Deland, Florida on May 7, 2014. Over 40 family law practitioners attended along with a general magistrate and court mediator to discuss issues regarding professionalism, ethics and civility by lawyers toward litigants, witnesses, judges and fellow lawyers.
President Dwight D. Eisenhower declared May 1st to be Law Day in 1958 in response to May Day, which was celebrated in other countries around the world. The purpose of Law Day was for the people of the United States to celebrate their liberties and democratic way of life. Many bar associations, including the Volusia County Bar Association, celebrate the first week of May as Law Week by, among other things, arranging for attorneys to visit local schools to speak to students about the American legal system.
